About the Laurels Project

Rarely does a project of such overarching cultural and historical significance cross the threshold from concept to reality with as much collaborative passion and dynamism as LAURELS: The Twenty-first Century American Women Composers Project.

Beginning with LAURELS 2004-2005 and regenerating every two years for a period of ten years, LAURELS commissions, records, publishes and promotes international multimedia performances of newly created works by over 150 contemporary American women composers, opening refreshing new windows for composers, performers and audiences into literature-based musical sounds and ideas expressed through a non-voiced solo instrument the Flute.

Highlighting the work and achievements of an impressive roster of leading women role models in the arts, LAURELS explores and celebrates the rich panorama of aesthetic styles and compositional diversity prevalent in Twenty-First century American culture and creates and assembles multidimensional documentation and curricular reference material critically needed by educational institutions, libraries, media, and concert programming venues.

Produced by American flutist, Nina Assimakopoulos, LAURELS merges the talents of  writers, composers, and performers into an intelligent and articulate body of work, startlingly ambitious in conception and brilliant in design, with vital implications for current and emerging artists and audiences. CD recording completion is projected for Spring 2005.
