Acceptance to West Virginia University as a Music Major is a two-step process. First, the applicant must be accepted by the University, and then by the School of Music.

We require three letters of recommendation in total. The recommendations required for the WVU application are also applicable to our music application. The letters can be in any format that is convenient for your recommenders: uploaded to the WVU website, or sent to the School of Music in letter form or as an email attachment. When you give the WVU online application the name and email of a recommender, an email is sent to that recommender asking for the recommendation, and they can upload it directly to your WVU application. If your recommender wants to send an email, send it to: Cynthia.Anderson@mail.wvu.edu. You may also send hard copies of your letters of recommendation via US mail to the School of Music (School of Music, College of Creative Arts, PO Box 6111, Morgantown, WV 26506).

Your personal statement can be anything you wish that will help us know more about you, your training, and your aspirations for the profession.

If you have questions about any other details of the application process or our Graduate Studies program, please contact our wonderful and very friendly graduate coordinator Dr. Anderson at cynthia.anderson@mail.wvu.edu/ Phone: (304) 293.4489. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL (English test) results before an application can be considered for admission to the WVU: https://www.ets.org/toefl

For questions regarding the international student admission process please visit:

http://admissions.wvu.edu/admissions/toefl/graduate-students

The Internet-Based, Computer-Based and Paper-Based TOEFL exams are all accepted in the WVU admissions process. In many cases TOEFL results are valid for two years. Recently expired results may be accepted by the unveristy in some cases. Please check with International Admissions

Required scores for graduate admission:Internet-Based = 79

Computer-Based = 213

Paper-Based = 550

IELTS = 6.5

For students whose TOEFL are below admission standards, WVU will offer admission that is IEP conditional -- that is, they will be admissible to a program after they have passed the Intensive English Program. That is a semester (sometimes 2) of nothing but courses in the IEP program. At the end of the program, they "pass" based on their grade in the course and the level of the course they have taken. I think they may have to take the TOEFL at the end, as well. Such applicants must enroll in the WVU Intensive English Program prior to beginning their academic program. Applicants who wish to be considered for this option must notify the Office of Admissions when they submit their application. Additional information about the Intensive English Program can be obtained by e-mailing iep@mail.wvu.edu.

For international students, we recommend a completed application as early as possible. That includes all required application materials, official transcripts and recommendations, and a completed audition. It is best if all application requirements be completed no later than March 1 prior to the semester of preferred enrollment. Scholarship decisions are made on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. The earlier the completed application the better the chances of receiving scholarship awards.

Students unable to audition live and in person may email Professor Assimakopoulos and submit a high quality DVD recording or link to online video of playing.

Information regarding repertoire required for audition is listed below.

GRADUATE FINANCIAL AWARDS:

Tuition cost information can be found here: http://tuition.wvu.edu/graduate

Almost HALF of the graduate students in the School of Music receive financial support from the school! School of Music support comes in many forms such as 1) Graduate Assistantships, 2) Graduate Student employment, and 3) partial tuition waivers. ALL graduate students who complete the Graduate Assistantship Application are considered for any type of financial support available. If you wish to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship, your Assistantship Application must be submitted before you schedule an audition.

For more information on financial assistance:

WVU School of Music Scholarships:

http://ccarts.wvu.edu/academics/scholarships

Graduate Awards in the School of Music are highly competitive and are based on artistic merit, academic merit, professional experience, and the applicant’s strengths and interests in conjunction with the ever-evolving needs of the School of Music. Scholarship decisions are made on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. The earlier the completed application the better the chances of receiving scholarship awards. Priority consideration is given to students who have completed admission files by MARCH 1.

The School of Music offers a limited number of Graduate Assistantships, which include WV University tuition waiver (does not include university fees or College of Creative Arts tuition), stipend of $12,400 for the academic year, and health benefits. The School of Music has one Graduate Assistantship dedicated to the Flute. The Flute Graduate Assistant position is currently available beginning  2017.  The Flute Graduate Assistantship position includes performance with the Graduate Wind Quintet as well as some other work assignments TBD based on the student's skills and interests and the needs of the School. The Flute Graduate Assistant position includes full tuition waiver, a stipend of at least $12,400 and health benefits.

If a student does not receive an assistantship from the School of Music, the school also offers a limited number of meritorious credit hour waivers to eligible students. For a graduate student who is offered waivers, the typical award ranges from 3 to 5 credit hour waivers, awarded on a per-semester basis. All full-time graduate students take a minimum of 9 credit hours, and you don't have to pay for any more than 9 credits unless you take more than 15 credits — so a 3-credit waiver award covers approximately 1/3 of WV university tuition. These waiver awards function in essence as partial scholarships.

Graduate students are eligible to receive Graduate Assistant positions outside of music in areas as well. These include assistantship positions such as Residence Hall Assistants, Advising Center Assistantships, etc. Students interested in Graduate Assistant positions through West Virginia University may pursue information through the WVU Office of Financial Aid: http://graduate.wvu.edu/funding-and-costs/graduate-assistantships-new

The WVU Graduate Education and Life grad.wvu.edu and http://grad.wvu.edu/financial_assistance has information on additional Fellowships and other forms of funding including graduate assistantship positions through the following entities:

WVU Student Housing, WVU Student Advising, WVU Library, and WVU Office of International Students and Scholars. It's a good idea to look at that information when considering aid for school. Contact the WVU Office of Graduate Education and Life GradEd@mail.wvu.edu for questions about these non-music funding opportunities.

Students looking for part-time jobs, full-time jobs or non-departmental assistantships can also e-mail the Office of Student Employment at studentjobs@mail.wvu.edu and request to receive the "E-mail Blast" that is sent out on average once a week.  This e-mail is updated once or twice a week and lists all part-time and full-time jobs on and near campus as well as all assistantships.
