WVU SCHOOL OF MUSIC

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

Acceptance to West Virginia University as a Music Major is a two-step process. First, the applicant must be accepted by the University, and then by the School of Music. For general information on admissions, auditions, and degree requirements please check out: http://www.music.wvu.edu/academics/undergraduate-programs

Our University and School of Music application are both electronic. Applicants may also send a personal statement and resume with their music application.

The School of Music only requires 2 letters of recommendation in total. The recommendations required for the WVU (university) application are also applicable to our music application.

UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION DATES:

I encourage all prospective students to attend the official WVU campus tour (http://apply.wvu.edu/visit) as well as to try and schedule a private lesson with me while on campus. For information on private lessons please contact me directly and provide the dates you are considering visiting. Please be in contact with me as early as possible if for any reason you are unable to make any of the scheduled audition dates.

A list of the scheduled audition dates can be found here:

http://ccarts.wvu.edu/academics/audition-and-portfolio-review-day

Students unable to attend the audition times may email Professor Assimakopoulos to schedule another time or may submit a high quality DVD recording or link to online video of playing. Acceptance into the WVU flute studio is competitive. Live auditions are highly recommended.

UNDERGRADUATE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

• All major scales over the full range of the instrument

• Chromatic scale slurred over the full range of the instrument

• Two contrasting works from the standard solo repertoire. These can include entire pieces or individual movements from significant concerti or sonatas. One work may be a concert etude composed for the instrument. Piano accompaniment is not necessary.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL (English test) results before an application can be considered for admission to WVU: https://www.ets.org/toefl

For more questions on the international admission process you may visit:

http://admissions.wvu.edu/admissions/toefl/international-first-time-freshmen-and-transfer-students

Required Undergraduate TOEFL scores:

Internet-Based = 61;Computer-Based = 173;Paper-Based = 500

IELTS = 6.0

For students whose TOEFL are below admission standards, WVU will offer admission that is IEP conditional -- that is, they will be admissible to a program after they have passed the Intensive English Program. That is a semester (sometimes 2) of nothing but courses in the IEP program. At the end of the program, they "pass" based on their grade in the course and the level of the course they have taken. I think they may have to take the TOEFL at the end, as well. Such applicants must enroll in the WVU Intensive English Program prior to beginning their academic program. Applicants who wish to be considered for this option must notify the Office of Admissions when they submit their application. Additional information about the Intensive English Program can be obtained by e-mailing iep@mail.wvu.edu.
